Here and There…Now and Then |
Olney Fountain
At this revitalized shopping center in Olney there is a new fountain. On warm summer evenings you’ll find children playing in the water but it was a bit chilly for that this evening. Still, there were quite a few people about and a long line for ice cream. The loss of B.J. Pumpernickel (it wasn’t forced to close, but it’s gone nonetheless) still makes us sad, though.

Dorothy’s 15th
We celebrated Dorothy’s birthday quietly at Panera with a good friend this evening. That’s one of my favorite ways to unwind (the good friend part, that is, not Panera specifically).
BWI Airport
It’s not exactly an Eero Saarinen but I’ve always liked BWI airport. Also, dropping people off there is a good excuse to stop take a short detour to G&M to buy some of the best crab cakes anywhere. They aren’t particularly cheap but at a half pound each and almost all crab meat, they’re worth it.
Jessie and Erin
Jessie and Erin, two of the vocalists in the church youth band and (of course) Dorothy’s friends.
Rocklands Farm
We had pretty rotten weather—cold and rainy—for the 2nd annual Old Seneca Artisans Festival at Rocklands Farm today but that’s something none of us can control. I enjoyed meeting the few brave souls who did venture out and it’s always nice to be with the farmers. This is the farm’s “class of 2011”.
Dot’s Quilt
I enjoyed the Bethesda Quilters’ biennial show this evening. This is one of my favorites, called “Let’s Have Some Fun” and made by my mom. On the tag it says, “After taking Sarah Paulik’s class — fun to make free forms. Bright colors.” It is 62″ x 74″.
Rice
Dorothy and I stopped at Latte Plaza on the way home from Laurel today. I took a few pictures there, including this stack of sacks of rice, definitely our favorite form of starch.
Nate
All evening Nate tried to photobomb my pictures but I managed to avoid him every time. He did “strike a pose” for me and I thought I’d reward him for his efforts by using that as my photo for today.
CT Scan
I had a follow-up CT scan this morning. Everything’s fine. Anyway, here’s the machine and the nice young woman who operated it.
Toad Lily
This is a toad lily, Tricyrtis formosana ‘Samurai’ growing in our front yard. Actually, it’s still in a pot. First it was too dry to plant anything, then it was too wet.
Mushrooms and Ant
These mushrooms have suddenly appeared in our back yard. I’m hoping they are growing on the roots of the tree that came down in the summer of 2010.
Spring’s Farm
At the corner of Sugarland and Montevideo Roads, just south of Dawsonville is Spring’s Farm. Looks like soy beans this year.
Painter’s Palette
Persicaria virginiana ‘Painter’s Palette’ is a slightly invasive perennial but nothing like loosestrife so I don’t mind it so much. It has pretty, variegated foliage and tiny, bright pink (almost red) flowers on long stalks.
Ball Chain
I took our 20 year old car to have its emissions tested today and was quite surprised when it actually passed. I thought about posting a picture of the car or its engine but Dorothy and I decided this was a more interesting picture. It’s a length of ball chain, coiled into a spiral.
Mosaic
I happened to find myself in downtown Rockville and came across this building with a lovely mosaic on the wall. Then I realized I knew the business housed there. This is the home of History Associates.
Grasshopper
What a perfectly beautiful day it was after the rain stopped and it cleared up. It was a pleasant temperature and there was a gentle breeze. I went outside briefly and took a few pictures including some of this little grasshopper who let me get quite close.

Stephanie
I didn’t take a lot of pictures today but even if I had, I think I’d like this one best. Stephanie was home on a brief visit from college so we got to see her this morning, which was a treat.
