The name crocus comes from krokos (\u03ba\u03c1\u03cc\u03ba\u03bf\u03c2) the ancient Greek name for saffron (<em>Crocus sativus<\/em>). While crocuses prefer gritty, well-drained soils they do amazingly well in our heavy, clay soil that is totally water logged all winter most years. This one is growing in a bed of lily of the valley (<em>Convallaria majalis<\/em>) and <em>Vinca minor<\/em> in our back yard.
