The trees are fairly slow growing and the wood is very hard and dense, actually being dense enough that it doesn&#8217;t float. This, along with ash, is the wood that was used in ancient Greece for making spears. According to the 2nd century A.D. geographer Pausanias, the Trojan horse, built by the Greeks was built of cornel from a grove of trees sacred to Apollo.
