Dog on Gettysburg Monument
On Oak Ridge on the northern part of the Gettysburg Battlefield, there is a monument to the 11th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment. On the monument there is a soldier facing west, away from the road. On the west side, lower down, there is a dog. The dog is Sallie Ann Jarrett, the regiment’s mascot, who apparently traveled with the regiment throughout much of the Civil War. She was killed on February 1865 at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House.
North of this monument is the Eternal Light Peace Memorial, built in 1938 and dedicated on the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. Near the 11th Pennsylvania Volunteer monument is a viewing tower, that offers a nice view of the northern portion of the battlefield. This area is not as crowded as the Little Round Top or other parts of the park.
