Lincoln Memorial
I went on a field trip with Dorothy’s class today, visiting Ford’s Theatre and the Lincoln Memorial. The class posed for a group picture as we left Lincoln.

They’re kind of expensive but they really are the best markers around. Dorothy had them out to work on a project for her history class this evening and I was wandering around the house looking for things to photograph. I got a picture or two of Dorothy but she didn’t like them, so you get the markers, instead.

We stopped in Cabela’s in Wheeling on the way home from Cincinnati. It’s part sporting goods store, part natural history museum, filled with stuffed animals of every description.

Look up the word exuberance in any dictionary worth its salt and you’ll see a picture of this boy. It isn’t completely clear in this picture that he’s not simply kneeling in front of this leaf pile. No one who knows Brandon, however, will have any doubt that he is airborne and traveling at great speed, heading for the middle of the pile.

We had a three day weekend and had to decide between going to New York and going to Cincinnati. New York has Lady Liberty, the Empire State Building, and Broadway. Cincinnati has Bill and Kristine. Cincinnati won.

Since Jack (and his parents) leave on Saturday, Dorothy and I paid a quick visit this evening. Jack was a bit tired but oh, so cute.

It was a beautiful day today and I made time to go out in the woods next to my office. Early in the year I photographed dried leaves and seed pods. We’re coming full circle and the seed pods are out and starting to dry.

This stretch of Norbeck Road had Zelkova serrata planted on both sides and down the median and it looks nice most of the year. Right now, though, it’s really at its best, particularly with late-day light setting the red leaves on fire.

Yes, banana suits seem to be in this year. These four neighborhood kids are in my mother-in-law’s neighborhood, actually, not ours.

After the snow yesterday, the sky cleared overnight and it got pretty cold. There was a nice frost this morning with the edges of the fallen leaves turned white with a thin border of ice. Lovely.

We had an early snow fall today. We didn’t actually get a lot on the ground, although as near as Damascus there was noticeably more. In New Jersey George got a fair amount and further north it was as much as 30 inches. Still, snow in October is reasonably rare here and it was fun to come across this snow man, even if it is only about two feet tall. I think they must have collected snow off their cars, where it accumulated a bit more.
Dorothy said I should mention that I edited out a political sign for a candidate for the upcoming Rockville mayoral election. It didn’t really add anything to the picture. I didn’t bother to take out the wire supports for the sign and you can see them in the lower left.

Well, Dot and Donna returned from three and a half weeks in southern Africa this evening. What a wonderful trip they had. I had to satisfy myself with pictures of blurred people at BWI Airport.

A couple weeks ago I had a picture of Dorothy “Doing Her Homework.” This time she actually is doing her homework. It was about 9:30 and I realized I hadn’t taken any pictures today so she smiled for me (or something). And now we’ve reached the 3 in 365.

Cathy and I took a nice walk at lunchtime today. I carried my camera and took a few pictures of various things—claret colored sumac leaves, porcelain berry, and some crab apples.

It was a busy day at work today (it’s going to be that way for a while) so I didn’t get a chance to go out and take pictures. I took this picture of fall color on the way home, though. There is still a lot of green out there but it’s getting really pretty.
