This American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) is in our neighbor’s yard. It’s a bit, healthy tree and in the summer it is often lovely at dusk with the evening sun turning the bright green leaves a wonderful orange-green that’s very hard to describe. In the winter, without its leaves, the beauty of the sycamore is in their bark, which is a lovely white, especially against the blue of a winter sky. They are large trees and generally better suited to parks and open areas but they also make a fine city tree, being quite tolerant in their habits.

Sycamores On The Potomac
Dorothy and Jeff were able to stay here for an extended visit this year, which was lovely. Today we drove out to McKee-Beshers for a walk that ended up being about 31⁄4 miles. I took my camera and long lens with me and got a few photos of northern flickers (Colaptes auratus) but otherwise, no birds. I heard a lot and saw a few, but not well enough for photos. We made our way to the C&O Canal and the Potomac River and this is a view across the Potomac with sycamore trees in Virginia. We’re looking between Van Deventer and Tenfoot Islands to the Horsepen Run Nature Preserve
