I like the shape of this leaf silhouetted against the snow.
UPDATE: It was suggested that this could be named “Fire and Ice”.

Yesterday I decided to go into the older woods between my building and Key West Avenue. It’s much different to the empty lot I’ve been visiting. Older (but still not terribly old). It’s interesting what you’ll find in the woods. There seems to be the remains of an old road. I found a deer skin and this old shopping cart.
It was chilly this morning and ice crystals had formed on my car windshield over night. I’m not sure about the color in this but wonder if it has to do with the polarizing effect of the crystals in combination with the safety glass.
I took quite a few pictures today but can only publish one here, so I went with all the kids at our Chinese New Year dinner.
I don’t think I need to explain why I picked this picture for today.
Or are you Pterrified of Pteridophytes? These are the sporangia of a sensitive fern Onoclea sensibilis. Aren’t they nice? It was much warmer today and I noticed the buds on a rose were already swelling. They won’t really start to grow for a while yet, but spring will be here sooner than you think.
I decided to try something a little different today so I went micro. This image is the underside of a leaf from a Gill-Over-the-Ground plant (Glechoma hederacea). The section of leaf shown is about 8 by 12 mm. It isn’t quite as sharp as I’d like. Still, the damp, soft ground isn’t the firmest base for a tripod and the wind kept moving the leaf.
The stream next to my office was flowing fast and furious today, with melting snow. I took a bunch of pictures of the stationary waves and this is my favorite of them.
The challenge: take a picture of a blank wall and make it interesting. The problem: as soon as there’s any pattern on the wall, it’s not truly blank any more. This is as close to a blank wall as I could get and still have much interest. It’s really bothering Dorothy, so that’s something, anyway.
This is the daughter Kathy, of a friend of mine at work. Her mom calls her Corey (her first name) but she introduces herself as Shaina (her middle name).
I took a lot of good pictures today of people, mostly friends from church. I couldn’t pick one as being better than the rest so I’ve decided to put them up in their own gallery and just put this picture up as my Project 365 image. I’m undecided as to whether it would look better if the pavement was in focus as well as the trees but I Like it, anyway.
I didn’t find much to photograph today and wasn’t out very long. I did take a few pictures of this rose thorn with my micro set-up. It is about 3/8 of an inch long.
This is actually more ring size, the branch is about a half inch in diameter, but in this picture it looks like a bracelet, I think. I imagine it worked in silver.
I took pictures at the WCA basketball game today but didn’t get anything I’m anxious to share with the world. The pictures of the fans were better than those of the game but even that’s not saying much. So, here’s a picture of reflections. This is the rec. center at the corner of Key West and Gude Drive.
Dorothy had some friends over this afternoon. Unfortunately I didn’t think to take any pictures until after some had left. Here are some of them, anyway.
Today my dear mom turned 80 and we had a little surprise party for her with a few of her friends and of course the family. Thanks, mom, for everything and happy 80th birthday! We sure love you.
James is the grandson of our good friend Amanda. He’s a little shy around strangers but can be pretty cute once he warms up to you. This is somewhere in the in between stage. He still isn’t sure about this guy with the big camera.
I didn’t have time to go out to take pictures today because I needed to pick up a car from the shop and drop off another. I grabbed a carry-out order of sashimi. Some people, my wife and daughter, for instance, will find this about as disgusting as the pictures of the dead deer from a few weeks ago. It’s made worse, I suppose, by the fact that I’m going to eat it. I did and it was delish.
I really enjoy watching flames and we had a nice fire in the fireplace this evening. What do you see in this image?
This 1963 Thunderbird is in the parking lot next to my mechanic. He doesn’t own it. It does need new brake lines at the very least but I understand that for $3,500 it can be yours.
It was a very changeable day today, raining, then sunny, then cloudy. There was a red-tailed hawk circling over the field next to my office but by the time I got outside it was gone. So, you’ll have to be satisfied with a cloud picture, instead. They were moving fast and changing by the minute.
This is an old paper wasp nest that I found in our front garden this morning. Beautifully built.
took a bunch of pictures of folks after church this morning but can’t pick one of those to post over all the others. I’ll post some of them in the Rock Creek Folk gallery from a few weeks ago. For here, I’ll post another picture in the “blank wall” series. It probably would be better if I put some wine in the glasses and got some color in the picture. Maybe next time.
This is a paper weight that we bought in Venice in 2000. It’s like a little sea anemone locked in glass.
