Yes, banana suits seem to be in this year. These four neighborhood kids are in my mother-in-law’s neighborhood, actually, not ours.

Our First Frost
Our First Frost
After the snow yesterday, the sky cleared overnight and it got pretty cold. There was a nice frost this morning with the edges of the fallen leaves turned white with a thin border of ice. Lovely.

We had an early snow fall today. We didn’t actually get a lot on the ground, although as near as Damascus there was noticeably more. In New Jersey George got a fair amount and further north it was as much as 30 inches. Still, snow in October is reasonably rare here and it was fun to come across this snow man, even if it is only about two feet tall. I think they must have collected snow off their cars, where it accumulated a bit more.
Dorothy said I should mention that I edited out a political sign for a candidate for the upcoming Rockville mayoral election. It didn’t really add anything to the picture. I didn’t bother to take out the wire supports for the sign and you can see them in the lower left.

Well, Dot and Donna returned from three and a half weeks in southern Africa this evening. What a wonderful trip they had. I had to satisfy myself with pictures of blurred people at BWI Airport.

A couple weeks ago I had a picture of Dorothy “Doing Her Homework.” This time she actually is doing her homework. It was about 9:30 and I realized I hadn’t taken any pictures today so she smiled for me (or something). And now we’ve reached the 3 in 365.

Cathy and I took a nice walk at lunchtime today. I carried my camera and took a few pictures of various things—claret colored sumac leaves, porcelain berry, and some crab apples.

It was a busy day at work today (it’s going to be that way for a while) so I didn’t get a chance to go out and take pictures. I took this picture of fall color on the way home, though. There is still a lot of green out there but it’s getting really pretty.

I’ve sort of tried not to repeat subject matter this year, with the obvious exception of Cathy and Dorothy. Still, how can I not post another picture of this most adorable of little boys. Jack, we love you. Lauren and Tommy, thanks for letting him brighten our days (and we love you, too).

Yep, that’s Dorothy, sitting in the road. Cathy, her responsible mother is just standing there looking at her. Meanwhile her father is taking a picture. I’d say that pretty much sums up our family.

Dorothy and I had a great visit with the Tommy, Lauren, and Jack this evening. There may have been a little cuteness involved. We’re going to miss this family when they move.

Coming to work this morning there was a rainbow. With the camera sitting on the steering wheel and without actually looking through the viewfinder, I managed to get a pretty good picture.

There is still a lot of green around but individual trees are starting to show a lot of color. One of the maple trees in our back yard (this one, to be precise) is bright red and beautiful.

Pressing Grapes
Pressing Grapes
Well, the grapes arrived after 11:00 PM last night, long after we had gone home. We went back today and helped for a little while. Cathy and Dorothy both jumped in with both feet. I fished out stems and took pictures. We were only there a relatively short while but they were nearly done with all 5,000 pounds when we left.
In this picture, Cathy and Dorothy are crushing grapes while Anna, Greg, and Greg remove stems before carrying the bins to the basement.

Dry Day Lily Seed Pod
This little seed pod is on a dwarf day lily growing in a wooden box. I had hoped to have pictures of the Glenns pressing 5,000 pounds of grapes for wine but it was fruitless hope. By 9:00 PM the grapes were still in Pennsylvania.

Zinnia Bud

We have a bunch of zinnias blooming next to our driveway. This is a bud, just starting to open. Cathy asked me to take a picture of it when I got home from work. The problem was that it was a bit breezy and it wouldn’t hold still for me, but I think it turned out pretty well.

Outlaw Sheriff
Outlaw Sheriff
I visited the first grade today, dressed in disguise as the Outlaw Sheriff, hunting those pesky outlaw words (that don’t obey phonetic spelling rules). I had a bandana over my face (riding so far on horseback there is a lot of dust) so the kids didn’t know who I was. It was a fun time and hopefully something the students will remember.
